He's my favorite member of the Harvard 5. Here are three reasons why. Since I've been in the process of moving over the past couple of weeks, the blog has (unfortunately) taken a bit of a back seat to daily life, but I hope to return with some new content very soon. In the meantime, let's celebrate one of my favorite architects- John Johansen (who was born on June 29, 1916)- with a look back on a few Johansen-related posts. Cheers! columbus countdown #5: the l. frances smith elementary school More than a year after visiting, I'm still thinking about this Johansen-designed school in Indiana's "Mecca of Modernism", and honestly, if I had to redo my "columbus countdown" today, the Smith Elementary School might earn a higher spot (sorry, Deborah Berke). If you aren't familiar with Johansen's work, this design will tell you everything you need to know. It's a building that shouldn't work but does, and the community is better for it. the late mummers theatre Johansen's Oklahoma City theater design is sadly no longer with us, suffering a much different fate than the school Johansen designed for Columbus. A radical architectural gamble from the very beginning, Mummers Theatre remains a cautionary tale in the quest to preserve our recent past (and maybe, Johansen's work in particular). This tinker toy confection is gone but not forgotten. an orlando brute Dare I say that this might just be one of Orlando's best buildings? Sure the Johansen-designed library is heavy and hulking at first glance, but it is also dynamic and energetic with an interior that sparks any architecture (or book) lover's imagination. If you missed my post from a couple of months ago, it's worth checking out. Have ideas for posts or buildings you would like featured? Send me an email (via the contact link). And thanks for reading!
